Weather in spring usialy comes with rains and wet snow and we must be prepared. Usually we try to protect ourselves with an umbrella from the harsh weather. Someone can say that he prefers hoods, because they are more useful, but anyway – here are some tips on how to take care of an umbrella.
Since the umbrella, when in use, is exposed to a lot of moisture you must make sure you dry it well before storing. Simply leaving it in the hall for half an hour is enough. If you fold it while it is still damn, mildew can form, which means stains and odor. The frames of an umbrella, while being rust resistant, can gain rust if they are left damp and closed for longer than 24 hours.
Cleaners companies suggest a simple cleaning with a washcloth and warm water. If it is an umbrella from fiber based clothing, don’t use any detergents, because it may damage the likely waterproof coating it has and they can also cause discoloration.
Never consider using a rain umbrella like a sun one, and vice versa. A rain umbrella is likely do discolor and fade in the sun while sun umbrellas aren’t waterproof. Also the wind can be a pain. A strong gust can bend the umbrella in the opposite direction. To avoid this put the umbrella against the wind. If it is so-called “wind proof” – read the manual on how to do this, but to me there is no such thing. Another good tip from cleaners companies is to buy smaller umbrellas and a more bended ones. This way there is less chance it opens “guts out” and flies away from you – it has happened to me.
Last but not least – fold the umbrella properly. Follow the natural way of the frames. If you try to force it, it will break or bend – and then there is another headache to add. So don’t do it. And read the instructions.
