Eyeglasses were first used in 1000 A.D. and have changed tremendously throughout the ages. Eyeglasses continue to be popular, despite advances in technologies to improve vision, such as contact lenses and laser surgery. Many that use eyeglasses are not aware of how they are made, the options available and the need for them around the world.
MATERIALS
Eyeglass frames are usually made of plastic or metal. Some frames are made of titanium or other materials for those who are sensitive to certain metals. Some frames are flexible and some are padded. Though they are called eyeglasses, most lenses are not made of glass but of plastic. New technology has made it possible for glasses to be lighter, thinner and shaped more precisely to accommodate individual conditions.
STYLE
Over the years, eyeglasses have become a fashion accessory. They make a fashion statement with shape of frame, inlays, decorative stones and designer emblems. Some glasses are rimless, while others are made for a particular gender. Even children have a wide variety of choices and styles to choose from.
INNOVATION
Among the many innovations are lenses that are scratch-resistant, nonreflective, nongfogging, shatter-resistant and water-resistant. Multifocal and single-vision glasses are available. Lenses to accommodate small distortions in vision, special plastics that refract light and lenses that turn darker in the sun are available.
TYPES OF GLASSES
Eyeglass types include sports glasses, swim goggles, sunglasses, shooting glasses, ski glasses and safety goggles, each designed to protect and enhance your vision while you're engaged in specific activities.
WORLDWIDE NEED
People around the world need eyeglasses, especially in developing countries. The cost of eyeglasses can be three months' salary in some African countries. Four million pairs of unused glasses are thrown away in the United States. Nearly 1 billion people in the world need glasses and cannot afford them. Organizations like the Lions Club arrange for collection and distribution of glasses to needy countries.
