  1. Choose your yarn. It is best to use bulky or worsted weight yarn rather than thin, skinny yarns.

  2. Measure your head in inches.
  3. Knit a swatch with your yarn that you are using to knit a hat and measure how many stitches in an inch.
  4. Calcuate both of the results. Example, your head is 21 inch and your yarn is 4 stitches in an inch. 21x4= 84. You need to cast on 84 stitches to fit the hat with your head.
  5. Cast on the stitches and join in the round
  6. Knit every row until it's about 8 inches long. If 8 inches is too long, you can curl the stockinette stitch.
  7. Knit 5 stitches, then knit the next two together. Continue to knit 5 stitches and knit the next two together. The last two stitches should be knitted together if you've done it correctly.
  8. Purl one round.
  9. Knit 4 stitches, then knit the next two together. Continue to knit 4 stitches and knit the next two stitches together.
  10. Purl one round.
  11. Knit 3 stitches, then knit the next two together.
  12. Purl one round.
  13. Knit 2 stitches, then knit the next two together.
  14. Purl one round.
  15. Knit 1 stitch, then knit the next two together.
  16. Purl one round.
  17. Knit every two stitches together.
  18. Purl one round.
  19. Knit every two stitches together so you end with 6 stitches (if it's more or less than six stitches, it's okay).
  20. Measure about 3 feet (0.9 m) of yarn and cut it off from the skein.
  21. Take a large plastic sewing needle and thread it through the 6 stiches.
  22. Then, thread your needle into the inside of your head, and weave in the ends into some purl bumps.
  23. Turn the hat inside out to hide the seam.
